The Backdoor Portrait Series
by
Rachel Gorman
Sept 1 - October 31, 2010
This collection of images represents a famed neighbourhood in the city of Toronto, Little Italy. Each home bears its own unique marks of ownership, and after more than a century, a home can take on its own character. In a way, these inanimate portraits actually represent much more; an intimate view of a neighbourhood summed up by its’ buildings, alleyways and residents, past and present.
The images in this series were produced using the lith printing process. Lith printing uses conventional fiber printing techniques, the marked difference is in the developing agent and it’s outcome. The chemicals are prepared very close to exhaustion, and, in turn create a very fine grain structure in the image along with hints of colour. As a result of the process, each picture is entirely unique, never to be replicated.
Rachel Gorman is a Toronto based photographer who received her BFA in Photography from Ryerson’s School of Image Arts. She continues to draw inspiration from daily life and is moved by human expression expression and intimate gesture.
